Trailer Behind Enemy Lines (2001)

Lt. Chris Burnett, who wants to resign from the Navy, is teamed up with Lt. Jeremy Stackhouse to conduct a reconnaissance mission over war-torn Bosnia, where a peace treaty may put the devastating war to an end. During the mission, they fly their FA-18 off course to check out a suspicious target that turns out to be the site of a mass grave that contains bodies of Bosnian Muslims. The main perpetrator of the massacre, Gen. Miroslav Lokar, has the plane shot down in order to avoid having the plane obtaining evidence of the massacre. After parachuting into Serb-controlled Bosnian territory, Stackhouse is executed by Lokar's men while Burnett is on the run from the Serbs. Burnett's commanding officer, Rear Admiral Leslie Reigart, has trouble gaining approval from his own commanding officers to carry out a search-and-rescue mission to save Burnett, who fear that such a move will endanger the peace process. From encountering a major battle in a war-torn town, to mine fields, to Serb soldiers seeking the pilot, and to a highly skilled sniper, will Burnett be able to escape Bosnia, or will he suffer the same fate of his comrade? Adam has a successful practice as a doctor in New York City, but when Max foolishly tries to swindle some well-connected drug dealers, he has to leave the Big Apple, and somehow persuades his brother to take him to California. On the West Coast, Adam is able to use his medical background to get a lucrative new job, and Max fast talks his way onto the staff of a computer firm. However, Max's inability to stay on the straight and narrow and face his responsibilities quickly resurfaces, and when he starts using crystal meth, he loses his job. Adam also experiences a stretch of bad luck and loses his job, and as a sense of desperation takes hold, he starts joining Max in his drug fueled excesses, leading both down a road to destruction. "Good Time Max" received its world premiere at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival.

The notion of human-alien miscegenation, and the prospect of what kind of offspring would come from such an unholy union, is nothing new in movieland, but InAlienable gives it a new spin by handling it as a legal drama, pitting government vs. individual in a fight to determine just who said offspring would belong to. Director Robert Dyke's film is loaded with actors who've put in time on sci-fi shows, from Star Trek (several incarnations, including the original), Stargate, Alien Nation, Babylon 5, and Battlestar Galactica. The latter's Richard Hatch stars as Dr. Eric Norris, a scientist who's continuing with his research despite being guilt-ridden over the death of his wife and son in a car crash. When a friend brings him a meteorlike object that he found in the desert and asks Norris to check it out, the doc doesn't give it much thought--until he wakes up pregnant, having been invaded by the alien life form that had been on board the meteor. The humanoid thing that emerges from his abdomen is dismissed as a parasite, but it carries enough of Norris's DNA for him to take a shine to it; indeed, he names it "Benjamin" and insists on referring to it as his son, scary tentacles and all. That's when the sinister guys in dark suits show up, insisting that Benjamin should be handed over to the feds for the good of all, followed by lawyers, courtroom scenes, and so on. Sure, the idea is preposterous, but it could have been a fun ride were it not for the fact that InAlienable is, quite simply, very poorly done, with cheesy special effects and laughable action sequences. As for the cast, Hatch is fine, but much of the rest of the acting is dreadful, especially Courtney Peldon as Norris's love interest and Walter Koenig, Star Trek's Mr. Chekov himself, as his vengeful boss; then again, Brando and Olivier would have had a tough time with this script (also Koenig's work). Cool idea, though. --Sam Graham
